Kundan Necklace: The Mughal Jewelry Tradition That Indian Brides Have Trusted for Centuries

If there is one piece of Indian jewelry that carries the weight of history most visibly, it's the Kundan necklace. The setting technique behind it - pure gold foil worked around stones by hand, with lac backing, in intricate gold frameworks - was perfected in the Mughal courts of Jaipur and Lahore somewhere around the 16th century. The craftsmen who developed it were solving a specific problem: how do you make gemstones look like they're floating in gold, completely surrounded by metal, without prongs or visible settings? The answer was kundan - the purest refined gold worked so precisely around each stone that the stone appears to melt into the piece.

Walk into any traditional Indian jewelry shop from New Jersey to New Delhi and the Kundan necklace set is displayed at the center. It's the category that defines Indian bridal jewelry for most North Indian communities. It's what mothers buy for their daughters for weddings. It's what gets passed down, worn again decades later, and still looks appropriate because it has no relationship with trend cycles. The Kundan aesthetic has been what it is for four hundred years and it isn't changing.

What Makes a Kundan Necklace Actually Kundan

The word Kundan refers specifically to the setting technique - not the stone type, not the design, not the overall aesthetic. Kundan is what happens when refined gold foil (kundan) is worked around each stone individually, without prongs, to hold it in place in a bed of lac. Every stone in a Kundan piece is individually set this way. In a necklace with fifty stones, fifty individual stones have been separately fitted and surrounded with gold foil by a craftsman's hands.

The lac - a natural resinous material - is the invisible infrastructure of the piece. Each stone setting has a lac bed behind the stone that provides cushioning and stability. The lac also allows the setting to accommodate irregular stone shapes; because it's soft and moldable, it can create a precise backing for stones that aren't perfectly uniform. This is why Kundan and Polki (uncut diamonds in their irregular natural forms) go together so naturally - the lac setting handles irregular shapes that prong setting couldn't.

What you see from the front of a genuine Kundan gold necklace: stones that appear to float in the goldwork, surrounded by fine gold detailing, with no visible prongs or claws holding them in place. The stones seem integral to the piece rather than attached to it. That particular look is only achievable through Kundan technique - it can't be fully replicated with modern machine setting.

Kundan Necklace Styles - From Bridal to Everyday

The Kundan category spans a wider range than most people realize. The dominant mental image is the heavy bridal Kundan set - wide necklace, multiple stone rows, elaborate pendant, matching earrings and maang tikka - but that's one end of the spectrum.

Bridal Kundan necklaces are the full traditional format. Multiple rows of Kundan-set stones in deep jewel colors, elaborate goldwork between stone rows, often with pearl drops or meenakari enamel work on the reverse. These are pieces designed for weddings, for major family ceremonies, for the occasions where you're meant to walk into a room and be noticed. The bridal jewelry collection has a range of complete bridal Kundan sets.

Everyday Kundan necklaces - simpler single-pendant designs, thinner goldwork, fewer stone rows - bring the same Kundan setting technique to pieces with enough restraint that they can be worn to less formal occasions. A single Kundan pendant on a simple chain, or a thin Kundan collar necklace with minimal stone coverage, can work for semi-formal events and even elevated everyday wear.

Choker-format Kundan necklaces occupy the middle ground - substantial enough to be statement pieces, short enough to be versatile, and available in the choker set format that pairs the necklace with coordinating earrings as a complete look.

Pairing a Kundan Necklace - What Works and Why

Kundan necklaces are not mix-and-match pieces. The goldwork is specific, the stone colors are specific, and the overall visual weight is significant. They need to be worn with intention - not in the sense of formality, but in the sense of building a look around them rather than adding them to an existing look.

The classic pairing: a Kundan necklace set with matching Kundan earrings - whether purchased as a set or selected from the same design family. The earring should share the same stone colors, the same goldwork scale, and ideally some of the same design motifs as the necklace. This coordinated approach is what most Indian jewelry is designed for.

With rings: a Kundan ring adds the same aesthetic to the hand without competing with the necklace - as long as the ring scale is modest relative to the necklace. A small Kundan ring with a large Kundan necklace is balanced. Two large Kundan pieces competing for attention is visually exhausting.

Outfit pairing: Kundan necklaces belong with rich Indian textiles. Kanjivaram silk, Banarasi brocade, heavily embroidered lehengas, formal Anarkalis in jewel tones. These fabrics provide a backdrop worthy of the goldwork and don't compete with it. Lighter, more casual Indian fabrics or Western clothes feel underdressed against a heavy Kundan necklace - the piece outweighs its surroundings. For bridal context, the maang tikka guide covers how a Kundan necklace integrates with the full bridal headpiece-to-jewel look.

Kundan vs Polki vs CZ - Choosing the Right Necklace

These three categories are the main options in Indian necklace shopping, and the distinctions are meaningful enough to affect what you buy.

Kundan: Glass or synthetic stones in gold foil setting. Rich colors, dense goldwork, traditional aesthetic. The most culturally specific Indian look. Best for traditional Indian occasions.

Polki jewelry necklaces: Real uncut diamonds in Kundan-style setting. The most luxurious option - real diamonds, not glass. The diamond's natural form creates an organic sparkle different from both Kundan glass and CZ. Best for major bridal occasions and significant investments.

CZ/Zircon: Faceted synthetic stones that sparkle intensely. More contemporary aesthetic, higher brilliance, lower price. The zircon necklace collection covers this category. Best for contemporary events, receptions, and buyers who prioritize maximum sparkle. Our Kundan vs CZ guide is the most thorough breakdown of these differences - worth reading before committing to a necklace purchase.

Caring for a Kundan Necklace

Kundan necklaces have two vulnerability points: the lac backing and the gold plating. Both require specific care habits to maintain the piece's quality over time.

The lac behind each stone is sensitive to heat and chemicals. Keep the necklace away from direct heat sources (warm car interiors, radiators, direct sunlight for extended periods), and away from perfume, lotion, and cleaning products. These chemicals can soften or damage the lac, causing stones to shift or loosen in their settings.

Water is the other main risk. The gold plating and the lac both degrade with regular water exposure. Remove the necklace before washing hands, showering, or cooking. Brief contact won't cause immediate damage, but regular exposure over months accelerates deterioration.

Cleaning: dry soft cloth only. No ultrasonic cleaners, no soaking, no cleaning solutions. Storage: individually, in soft pouches. Don't stack Kundan necklaces on top of each other - the goldwork and stone settings will press against each other and eventually cause damage. The full necklace collection at Mataari has care information listed for specific pieces, and antique jewelry care guidance applies to Kundan pieces with antique finish as well.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kundan Necklaces

Is a Kundan necklace real gold?

Fashion Kundan necklaces are gold-plated - a base metal coated in gold plating, with pure gold foil (kundan) used around the stones. They are not solid gold or 22-karat gold. Fine jewelry Kundan in real 22-karat gold is a different, significantly more expensive category sold by specialist goldsmiths. At Mataari, Kundan necklaces are gold-plated fashion jewelry - beautiful, traditional in technique, but not solid gold.

How do I know if a Kundan necklace is good quality?

Look for even stone placement - all stones sitting flat and level, none tilting or rising above the setting surface. The gold foil around each stone should be neat and consistent, not patchy or missing. Stones should be firmly set with no wobble when the piece is gently handled. Weight that feels substantial for the design scale indicates better construction. Photos of the piece being worn (rather than product shots on white background) give the most realistic sense of scale and finish quality.

Can a Kundan necklace be worn with Western clothes?

Smaller, more restrained Kundan necklaces - simpler pendants, thinner construction - can work with Western clothes as a deliberate cultural statement. Heavy multi-row Kundan necklaces with elaborate goldwork are strongly culturally specific and typically work better within traditional Indian outfit contexts. The scale and visual weight of the piece is the deciding factor, not the category itself.

What stone colors are used in Kundan necklaces?

Traditional Kundan uses deeply saturated colors: emerald green (the most classic and traditional), ruby red, sapphire blue, turquoise, and white (simulating diamond). Navratan (nine-gem) Kundan pieces incorporate all nine sacred stone colors. The colors are integral to the aesthetic - clear or pastel stones in a Kundan setting look incongruous against the traditional deep-color palette.
