Indian Jewelry Under $30: What You Actually Get
Under $30, you're almost always buying a brass or alloy base with a thin layer of gold on top, set with CZ or glass stones. That's fine for a few events a year. It won't survive daily wear the way a pricier piece can. At Mataari, the under-$30 collection is mostly cocktail rings right now, so if you came here looking for $25 jhumkas, that's a different price bracket.
We'd rather say that upfront than have you find out at checkout.
What's in Our Under-$30 Collection Right Now
When we checked the collection in October 2026, every piece in it was a ring. Most are cocktail rings with a big colored center stone and a CZ halo: emerald green, ruby red, pink, violet. There's also a simple adjustable ring with a natural rose quartz stone in a bezel setting.
Why rings? A ring uses less metal and fewer stones than a necklace set or a pair of jhumkas. So it's one of the few pieces that can be made well at this price.
Earrings, bangles and necklace sets mostly start in the next bracket up. Our price tiers run like this:
- Under $29.99: mostly rings
- Under $49.99: more earrings and lighter pieces
- Under $69.99
- Under $99.99
- Under $129.99

How Plated Jewelry Is Made, and Why Price Follows the Gold Layer
A gold-plated piece has two parts. A base metal underneath, usually brass. And a gold layer on top, measured in microns.
That top layer is where most of the cost difference hides. More gold means a longer life. It also means a higher price.
The US Federal Trade Commission's Jewelry Guides give rough markers here. A piece sold as "gold electroplate" should carry at least 10k gold at a minimum of 0.175 microns. Anything thinner should be called "gold flashed" or "gold washed." "Heavy gold electroplate" starts at 2.5 microns.
Most sellers, us included, don't print the micron number on every listing. So at under $30, assume you're at the thinner end. A $25 piece just doesn't leave much room for a thick gold layer after the stones, the labor and the shipping are paid for.

What Changes as You Move Up a Price Bracket
None of these are hard rules. But across a catalog sorted by price, the pattern holds pretty well.
$30 to $50. A bit more room for plating and slightly bigger or better stones. This is where most earrings start.
$50 to $70. More detailed work. Multi-stone settings, layered designs, and Kundan, where stones are set over a foil backing by hand. That handwork costs more than a single glued stone.
$70 to $100. Bigger statement pieces, full sets, and stones like moissanite, which costs more than CZ at the same size. If the difference between those stones is fuzzy, read zircon vs CZ vs moissanite.
Cheap vs Badly Made: Not the Same Thing
"Cheap" gets used in two ways, and it helps to separate them.
One kind is badly made. Loose stones. Patchy plating. Sharp edges. A clasp that gives up the first night. That's a bad buy at any price.
The other kind is just inexpensive. Thin plating, simple setting, but put together properly and described truthfully. For a costume piece or a one-night outfit, that's a perfectly reasonable thing to buy.
The price tag won't tell you which one you're looking at. How clearly the seller describes the materials will.
If your skin reacts to some metals, plating thickness matters less than what's underneath. Our Silver 925 collection uses sterling silver as the base, so it doesn't depend on a thin gold layer to keep metal off your skin. Some sterling pieces still have a plated finish on top, so check the listing. More on that in what causes skin reactions to Indian jewelry.
What to Check Before You Buy Budget Jewelry
Three checks. Takes two minutes.
1. Does the listing say more than "gold plated"? If it names the base metal or the plating type, good sign. If it only says "gold tone" or "gold finish," you know less.
2. What's the base metal? Gold over sterling silver (sold as vermeil when the layer is thick enough) lasts longer than gold over brass or zinc alloy.
3. How are the stones held? Zoom into the photos. Little metal claws (prongs) or a metal rim around the stone (bezel) hold it in place. Glued stones are more common at low prices and loosen faster. This goes for rings, stud earrings and banglesalike.

What Under-$30 Pieces Are Good For
Good fits:
- One festival outfit you'll wear once or twice a year
- A backup ring for travel, where losing it wouldn't hurt much
- Matching gifts for bridesmaids or cousins, when you need five of something
- Trying a bold color or a big cocktail ring before spending more on one
Not great fits:
- A ring you'll wear every day, through handwashing and sweat
- A big gift meant to last years
For those, step up at least one bracket. Thicker plating and better construction start to show there.
Diwali Gifts Under $30
Diwali is November 8 this year. If you need a small gift for a sister, a friend or a coworker who'd appreciate something festive, rings are an easy pick. You don't have to guess her necklace length or whether her ears are pierced.
A few from the under-$30 collection that work well as gifts:
- Natural Rose Quartz Adjustable Ring: adjustable, so sizing isn't a worry. Quiet enough for everyday.
- Ruby Radiance Cocktail Ring: a big red stone that suits a red or maroon Diwali outfit.
- Emerald Halo Luxe Ring: green center stone with a CZ border. Pairs well with gold-toned outfits.
- Violet Crystal Flower Cocktail Ring: a flower shape for someone who likes color and doesn't do plain.

Making a Budget Piece Last Longer
Thin plating wears fastest from friction, sweat, water and perfume. A few habits slow that down a lot:
- Put the ring on last, after perfume, lotion and hairspray.
- Take it off before washing hands, showering or working out.
- Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.
- Store it alone in its box or pouch, away from heat and humidity.
That matches our jewelry care page. For more detail, see how to care for gold-plated Indian jewelry.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does gold-plated jewelry under $30 last?
It depends mostly on how you wear it. A ring worn to a few events a year and stored dry can look good for a long time. The same ring worn daily, through handwashing and lotion, will show wear much sooner. There's no fixed number.
Is gold-plated jewelry under $30 real gold?
The top layer is usually real gold, but it's very thin. Underneath is a base metal like brass. It's not solid gold, and it won't hold value the way solid gold does.
What's the difference between gold plated and gold vermeil?
Vermeil is gold over sterling silver, with a thicker gold layer. Under the FTC's Jewelry Guides, it needs at least 10k gold and a minimum thickness of 2.5 microns. Regular gold plating is usually over brass and often much thinner.
Does Mataari sell earrings under $30?
As of October 2026, the under-$29.99 collection is mostly rings. Earrings start in the under-$49.99 range.
Is it better to buy several cheap pieces or one mid-range piece?
For variety across lots of outfits, a few budget pieces make sense. For one piece you'll wear often for years, one mid-range buy usually works out cheaper per wear.
Thirty dollars still buys real jewelry. Just know which kind before you check out.
